Degenfeld Szamorodni is a great introduction into the world of Hungarian dessert wines. The Tokaj region is located on the site of hundreds of extinct volcanoes, and it produces some of the best dessert wines in the world, of which Tokaji Aszú is the most well-known.
Szamorodni is a more easy-going, lighter dessert wine, made from late-harvest grapes that have been affected by botrytis, a noble rot that gives many of the world’s best dessert wines their distinctive flavor. However, unlike Aszú, grape bunches are harvested whole for Szamorodni and aged less in the barrel producing a fresher style of wine.
An organically-cultivated Furmint that comes from 25-year-old vines grown on the loess- and rhyolite-rich brown forest soil of the Galambos vineyard. In order to keep its freshness, it was fermented in tanks, then aged in 300-litre Zemplén oak for 12 months. Dried apricot and beeswax on the nose, then exotic fruits, acacia honey on the palate.
