Grape variety Kékfrankos

Situated in the far west of the country, close to the Austrian border, Köszeg and its region is best known for its red wines made from Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch), the quintessential Danube grape variety.
The brand-new Domaine Unger owns 3 hectares of the region's finest vines. They work biodynamically, with low intervention.

An experimental batch, most of the grapes come from the Csúcsos vineyard (crumbly soil). The grapes are cold-soaked for a longer period, which delays fermentation. Part of the wine is aged in vats, the rest in barrels. The result is a convincing Austrian-style wine. The colour is a deep purple, even at four years of age. The nose is of cherries and morello cherries, with a hint of spice. The acidity and light tannins have now found their place. The palate is fleshy, heavy, juicy and fairly intense. Morello cherries, wild berries, pepper and a little caraway, with subtle acidity.
