We do a big Pinot Noir tasting every year, whereby we taste Pinots from our earliest vintages to the wines that are currently on the market. We often feel that Pinot gives big wines here in Etyek, even in vintages that are considered weaker. 2017 was a good vintage with lots of struggle. We usually dedicate five harvest days to Pinot and we pick the various clones at different times. Also, the bunches from the diverse soil of the Nagy-Látó vineyard ripen at different times. For the 2017 vintage, we mostly harvested from the older Guyot-trained vines, some 8-10, tiny, 100-gram bunches per vine. Following fermentation, they are put into the barrels of the year of the harvest where they age for a year. Alongside the barrels made from Zemplén oak, we use Stockinger, Taransaud and Seguin Moreau barrels –increasingly favouring the French ones. The best wines and the nicest barrels enrich the Pinot Noir Selection wine, while most of it goes into the regular Pinot Noir.” – winemaker, Sándor Mérész.
