One of the first wines of the Heimann family’s new range, Heimann & Fiai (Heimann & Sons). Hand-harvested and made with minimal intervention, using whole-bunch pressing and wild fermentation. Spicy, cool and elegant, full of red fruit with a slight, but very moderate wildness that comes from the natural techniques. Deep aromas, green herbs, anise, stems and the sultry, primary fruit notes. The palate is not finely chiselled, but thick and rustic. A great Hungarian take on the contemporary natural winemaking style.
Mainly loess soil with Terra Rossa. Fermented in large (5000-8000 liter) wooden and stainless steel open vats, 20-25 days of maceration, then aged 8 months in used oak. An unfined, hardly filtered wine that was bottled with a tiny bit of sulphur.
Wine Anorak, November 2020.
Heimann & Fiai Szekszárd Kékfrankos 2018 Szekszárd, Hungary
12% alcohol. Regional wine from five-year old vines. Wild ferment, whole bunch, large Hungarian oak and a bit of stainless steel. Fresh, vivid, sweetly fruited and a bit spicy. Supple and bright, with a pepper and spice edge to the cherry and berry fruits, with a slightly tangy finish. Lovely purity and freshness here. Some fine green hints, with a crystalline quality on the finish. Shows freshness and delicacy with lovely purity to the fruit: this is low in alcohol but properly ripe. 93/100
