If we had to name the most famous red wine in Hungary, it would undoubtedly be the Kopár from Attila Gere. This bright, rich red wine from the Villány region was the first in its category and led the way for a generation of winemakers to make bold, full-bodied red wines in the area. While the first vintages were cabernet sauvignon-based and heavy in oak use, the Kopar 2016 is an elegant cabernet franc-cabernet sauvignon-merlot blend that is fruit-forward yet balanced, showing the best of Villány’s warm soils and an excellent vintage. Kopár is still one of the best wines in its category and shows just how far Hungarian winemaking has come in the past decades.
A lovely, balanced wine from a good vintage – a fruity, easy to love Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon blend. A beautiful wine that already has good drinkability, with emphasis on the elegant Cabernet Franc, with lots of delicious spices, blackberry, lingonberry and a touch of oak. It was partly fermented in steel tank, partly in wooden vats, then aged in new barrique and large ászok barrels for 16 months.
Alföldi Merlot, muveltakoholista.com, January 2020.
The nose is intense with good depth with aromas tending towards the darker end of the spectrum: balsamic vinegar, black olives, pencil shavings, blackberry and bluberries. There is no oak overkill, it’s not fuit forward, nor sweet or too alcoholic. The palate is classy, elegant, savoury, spicy with smooth textures, good balance and concentration. Though fairly lively, it’s not the last word in vigour. A fair amount of tannins but of good quality. During the three days of tasting it showed continuous improvement; so it might well be on its way to become one of the better Kopars.
