Szamorodni is a more easy-going, lighter dessert wine, made from late-harvest grapes that have been affected by botrytis, a noble rot that gives many of the world’s best dessert wines their distinctive flavor. However, unlike Aszú, grape bunches are harvested whole for Szamorodni and aged less in the barrel producing a fresher style of wine.
The rich must was fermented spontaneously in temperature-controlled tanks, then aged for a further year and a half in 300-litre barrels. The larger part of the blend is Furmint (80%), alongside the Kabar (10%) and Zéta (10%) varieties. Fresh aromas, green notes with honey and ripe apricot in the background, packing 128g/l of sugar, yet still wonderfully balanced so it doesn’t feel sticky or too sweet. Vibrant minerality and lingering acidity on the palate.
Degenfeld Szamorodni is a great way to try a truly special type of wine.
