  • KIRÁLYUDVAR

Királyudvar (which translates to The King’s Court) is a historic Hungarian wine estate with roots back to the 16th century. Királyudvar is located in the Tokaj wine region which sits about 220 kilometers northeast of Budapest, and the estate previously provided wines to the Habsburg dynasty. The estate as it is known today, however, was “established” in 1997 when American businessman Tony Hwang purchased it following a visit upon which the wines of the estate blew him away. Tony, alongside famed local winemaker István Szepsy, purchased 10 hectares of vineyards around the villages of Mád and Bodrogkeresztúr and reconstructed the château. Over time they expanded to about 75 hectares across the chief vineyards of Lapis, Henye, Percze, Becsek, Danczka, and Nyulászó, all of which are farmed organically with biodynamic practices in use as well. Királyudvar is known for their world-class wines across a range of styles, being highly regarded for dry, demi-sec, sweet, and sparkling wines produced with the native Furmint variety.

  • Kőfejtő Pince

The Kőfejtő cellar is located on the western side of Somló Hill, in the Séd area, close to the former quarry.

Approx. 1 hectare of our cultivated vineyards located here: Olaszrizling, Juhfark, Furmint and Hárslevelű varieties are grown.

We cultivate vineyards higher on the west side of the mountain: Juhfark and Furmint. In the spring of 2020, half an hectare Juhfark was planted on the south side of the Hill near to the Treadmill. Furthermore, we use lands on the south side of Ság Hill, where Syrah, Cabernet sauvignon and Juhfark are grown. Thus, we currently harvest from 3 to 5 hectares year to year. The last year was 2017 when we bought grapes, from that on we process only our own crops.

I cultivate the grapes myself with the help of my family. The rows with medium-high and low cordon cultivation are mountain-valley. Cultivation is influenced by two important factors. The composition of the soil, which is basalt gravel on a sand and clay basis, and the special microclimate formed by these dark minerals with the power of the sun. Namely, the plant is exposed to a huge amount of heat by the fact that the setting sun heats up the area, because in summer the solar incidence angle is high until sunset, so at night the heated soil further warms the grapes. In addition, the water holding capacity of the soil is low and poor in nutrients. With such conditions, I work with a minimal growing surface, which means a load of 6-8 buds per base and an extensive foliage. This lush foliage protects the crop from the scorching effects of excessive sunshine, and soften the shocking effects of the heat. Plant cultivation so far meets the requirements of organic farming, where the most important part is the accurate nutrient replenishment. I pick the grapes at full maturity, separately for each variety. I measure the phenolic ripeness by tasting the grapes.

All these conditions determine the content and style of Kőfejtő wines. The acidity is low compared to Somló wines. That’s what the area gives, so that’s what I build the wine on.

Winemaking takes place in the traditional way. 220-260 liter Szerednyei Zemplén oak barrals are used for fermentaition as well as for maturing for 6-8 months, and then, after a precisely adjusted bentonite clarification, I bottle the wine before harvest. The exact oenological practices are determined by the particular wine (extent of battonage, malic acid issue, sulfurization, aerating, barrel use) Since grapes are grown under organic conditions, I have virtually no need to interfere with wine development. (no yeast, no enzymes, no combined clarifications, etc.…)

I have lived on the estates since the spring of 2015, so I am part of the development of grapes and wines every day.

  • Kősziklás Borászat

  • Kreinbacher Birtok

The Estate was founded by József Kreinbacher who acquired the first vineyards at Somló in 2002. Since then, the replanting of the vines as well as the development of the viticulture and the winery have been continuous to create wines expressing the character of this unique terroir. By now the estate covers 43 hectares cultivated organically and in addition to this, the team harvests grapes from another 20-30 hectares each year.

2011 represents a remarkable milestone, the year when the new central winery and sparkling wine cellars were completed. In 2014 the Kreinbacher Estate introduced its very first sparkling wines elaborated here opening a new chapter in the history of the region.

It is 4-5 million years ago when the history of Nagy-Somló wine region started. That was the time when the lava erupted and the solidified basalt gradually emerged from the valley of the dried up, ancient see. The solid, resistant stones covering the mountain protected the alluvial subsoil from erosion and all the devastating forces of winds and rivers. This is why Somló is timeless and the monadnock bears the expressing Hungarian term ’witness mountain’. The highly mineral, slowly developing and concentrated wines of Somló also represent this heritage. They are famous for their longevity.

The plots of Kreinbacher enjoy perfect aspect under the basalt monoliths. The main grape varieties are Juhfark, Furmint, Olaszrizling and Hárslevelű. Syrah has also gained recognition among traditional local grapes thanks to the dedicated work of the team.

Besides the technical director Norbert Bodorkós, the winemaker György Várszegi and the viticulturist Dániel Molnár, the cellar master of Champagne Paul Bara - Christian Forget and an international consultant - Stefano Dini contribute to the mission.

  • Laposa Borbirtok

Laposa Wine Estate is one of the most popular wineries in Badacsony, one of the highest hills near Lake Balaton. Our family basically deals with traditional, local grape varieties which are located in the best-suited sites of the surrounding volcanic buttes. It was as early as the beginning of the ’90s that the winery started to grow. Our father had an excellent flair for selecting the best plots of the whole wine region: our parcels are dispersed among Badacsony, the Szent György mountain, Csobánc, the Köves mountain and Somló. To this day, these plots form the backbone of the Laposa Wine Estate, which has by now expanded to 17 hectares.

Our winery produces mostly white wines, using traditional, local grape varieties typical of the Badacsony wine region: a total of 120.000–150.000 bottles of wine are produced per annum, comprising Welschriesling, Rhine Riesling, Pinot gris, Kéknyelű, Furmint and Juhfark.
In our wines we strive to mirror the scenic beauty of basalt ridges as based on the local traditions. Their intensive and pure notes are yielded by the application of state-of-the-art technologies. Our standard items (Friss, Illatos and Rosé) exude milder and more fruity characters, while our higher-end wines express more pronounced marks of minerality inherent in the wine region, which is always matched by unadulterated elegance.
